Yuval Raphael, a 24-year-old Israeli and survivor of the Nova music festival massacre, placed second in the Eurovision Contest, finishing behind Austria. Though she didn’t win first place, Yuval won the audience/public vote, highlighting her success amongst listeners. Reflecting on her remarkable journey, she said, “The real victory will be when the hostages are home.” Despite calls to boycott Israel’s participation, and scary threats to her life as well as two protestors trying to mount the stage while she was on it, Raphael remained in the competition with grace.
