Ancient Olive Oil Industry Uncovered: Fortified Iron Age Centers Fueled Israel’s Economy Until Assyrian Conquest
Olive oil production was a key economic driver for the ancient Kingdom of Israel. The Israel Antiquities Authority reveal through excavations a fortified Iron Age olive oil center, which, along with other similar sites, contributed significantly to the region's economy in the eighth century BCE. The sites, likely part of a royal initiative, were strategically located in southern Samaria and were heavily fortified, suggesting central control. Archaeologist David Eitam’s analysis of the Beit Aryeh site, once known as Khirbat Khudash, estimated the production of 11,340 liters of olive oil annually, highlighting the site’s economic importance. Though no direct evidence links the sites to the royal family, their planned nature and fortifications indicate royal oversight. The olive oil centers were likely abandoned after the Assyrian invasion of 721 BCE, marking a decline in this critical economic industry.
